SACRED STRUCTURES AND TEMPLES INSIDE THE INNER COMPOUND (KURMABEDHA)

The followings are the sacred structures present inside the inner compound or Kurma Bedha:

1. Narasingha Temple (11th Century. 58' high) - Located to the west of Mukti Mandap. It was built long before the present Jagannath Temple, where Shree Jagannath was worshipped. It contains 61 inscriptions in decorative forms including 10 Avatars of Lord Vishnu.

2. Vimala Temple (13th Century. 60" high) - Located at the

south west corner . Goddess Vimala is also known as Bhairavi, the presiding deities of Puri.The decorative structures of the Temple have 8 nos of seated Digapalas and their consorts are like Mahisamardini, NavaSimha, and Boudha etc. Here Vimala is forearmed with aksshamala, Nagapasa, Kalasa and Varada. She is flanked by two female attendants. After the Food offered to Jagannath, is offered to Goddess Vimala and after that only it becomes Mahaprasad.

3. Lakshmi Temple (12th Century) - Located at North west corner with attached Kitchen and Store. The side deities are mainly the images of Gajalakhmi. Here Lakhmi is four armed with blessing Pose.

4. Surya Temple of 17th Centuty and 63" high.

5. Mukti Mandap (1578 AD) - It is a pillared hall with 16 pillars constructed by disciples of Sri Sankaracharya Matha of Puri Brahmin Pandits from near by 16 villages of Puri are qualified to be the member and to present their learning.

6. Kalpa Bata - Located to the west side of the Satyanarayana Temple and North side of the Hari Sahadeva Temple. The Oriya saint poets describe it also as Devamashana Bata, Akhyaya Bata,Bancha or Vamsi Bata.
